Ingredient information

Propylene glycol

Propylene glycol is used in many cosmetics as a moisture-retaining agent, but it can cause irritation on sensitive skin.

What is it?

Propylene glycol is a synthetic substance used as a humectant (moisture-retaining agent) and solvent in cosmetics, skincare and pharmaceutical products. It draws in moisture from the surrounding air and helps other ingredients penetrate the skin more effectively.

Why do we pay attention to it?

On sensitive skin, propylene glycol can cause irritation, redness and contact dermatitis. It also increases the penetration of other ingredients through the skin, which can be undesirable for sensitive skin. The EU classifies it as potentially irritating at concentrations above 2%.

What do we use instead?

In most products we use milder moisture-retaining ingredients such as glycerine.

Good to know

A small part of our range, including our mascaras, contains propylene glycol. Always check the product's ingredients list.
