Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers
Formaldehyde is a well known allergen used as a preservative. Read which Unity Cosmetics products contain a formaldehyde releaser.
What is it?
Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers (such as DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea and imidazolidinyl urea) are used as preservatives in cosmetics. They work by slowly releasing formaldehyde, which inhibits bacterial growth.
Why do we pay attention to it?
Formaldehyde is classified as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization. It is also one of the most common contact allergens and can cause skin irritation, eczema and respiratory problems even at low concentrations. The EU has set strict limits on its use in cosmetics.
What do we use instead?
In most products we use phenoxyethanol as the preservative. It does not release formaldehyde.
Good to know
According to their ingredient lists, our Mascara (599, 527 and 529), Eye pencil & Mascara (Black and Brown) and our Foundation in shades 710 to 790 contain diazolidinyl urea, a formaldehyde releaser.
